Building strong, sturdy bridges

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. Every day, people, cars, and trains need to travel from one place to another. But what happens when something like a river or deep canyon gets in the way? That’s when we need bridges – amazing structures that help us cross safely.

Bridges carry heavy loads, link cities, and even let boats pass underneath. They’re built from strong materials like metal, stone, wood, and glass. Engineers and builders work together to design bridges using maths, science, and creativity. They use special patterns and shapes to make them strong and sturdy. What shapes can you spot in real bridges? Have a go at making your own. What would you use to make sure it holds up?

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 2, Materials: Uses of everyday materials, Lesson 5: Testing strength
