Introducing syntax rules in Python

This Computing video introduces Year 6 pupils to the importance of syntax in text-based programming. It helps them understand that computers follow code exactly and that small changes can affect how a program works.

The video explains how punctuation, symbols and spacing change meaning in code, just as they do in written language. The children learn how Python uses syntax rules such as colons, indentation and brackets to understand instructions. They see examples of code working correctly and explore what happens when syntax errors are introduced. The video shows how errors are highlighted and fixed, encouraging the children to test, spot and improve their programs.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing Year 5 and 6 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to develop their digital skills, explore key computing concepts and create their own digital projects.
