Understanding abstraction

This Computing scheme of work video introduces pupils to the concept of abstraction – a key computational thinking skill for Key Stage 2 pupils. It explains how abstraction helps learners focus on important information while ignoring unnecessary details, making problem-solving more efficient.

The video uses real-life examples such as reading maps, typing on a keyboard and playing video games to illustrate how abstraction works in everyday situations. It then applies the concept to coding in Scratch, showing how abstraction can simplify a sequence of actions using loops and other programming tools.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Computing Computational thinking unit. It breaks down the concept of abstraction clearly, helping teachers feel confident in supporting pupils to build cleaner, simpler code and develop efficient problem-solving strategies.
