What seeds need to grow

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores how different conditions affect seed germination and early plant growth. The video follows an investigation comparing seeds grown with light, warmth, and water to those kept in the dark, unwatered, or in the cold.

Pupils observe how healthy green shoots grow in ideal conditions, while seeds grown in darkness produce tall, pale shoots, and those without water or warmth do not grow at all. The video encourages pupils to observe, compare, and reflect on their own results—showing that all outcomes, even unexpected ones, are valuable in science. It reinforces key concepts about what seeds need to germinate and helps develop observation and enquiry skills.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 2, Plants: Plant growth, Lesson 3: Germination
