What are candles for?

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It helps pupils explore what candles are, how they work, and why they are used by people from different worldviews. Pupils learn that a candle is made from wax and a wick, and that when the wick is lit, it creates a small flame that melts the wax. The video explains the parts of a candle and reminds pupils that fire is dangerous and candles should only be lit by a responsible adult.

The video goes on to explain how candles have been used throughout history, especially before electricity, as a source of light. Pupils discover that today candles are often used in celebrations, for relaxation, or during special ceremonies. They may symbolise warmth, remembrance or joy. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on times they’ve seen candles being used and think about what they might represent.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, Key stage 1, Year 2, What do candles mean to people? Lesson 1: What are candles?
