How the Romans fought

In this History video, pupils learn why the Roman army was so important and how it helped build and protect the Roman Empire. The video explains that the Roman army was highly organised, with soldiers trained for different roles and grouped into legions. It highlights how tactics, formations and strong discipline helped Roman soldiers succeed in battles across the empire.

Pupils discover how formations such as the wedge and the testudo helped the Romans stay safe and defeat enemies. The video also introduces key Latin commands used by soldiers and highlights the rewards and strict rules of life in the Roman army. It shows how military strength enabled the Romans to take control, maintain order and expand their empire.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s British history resources and shows how the Romans influenced Britain’s language, culture and landscape long after they left.
