The science of space blankets

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores the properties of a space blanket through a series of practical tests. The video guides pupils as they investigate how well the blanket reflects, blocks, and transmits light by measuring lux levels with a torch and light meter. Pupils compare direct light, reflected light, and transparency to better understand how the material behaves.

The video also demonstrates how to test the electrical conductivity of the space blanket using a simple circuit with a bulb or buzzer, as well as how to assess its strength by scratching the surface with a nail. These investigations help pupils develop observation, measuring, and data-recording skills while deepening their understanding of material properties and their uses.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Mixed-age, Y5/6 (A): Making connections: How reflective are space blankets?, Y5/6 (A): Lesson 4: Investigating space blankets – Extending
