Painting texture

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils explore how to create textured effects using paint and a variety of tools.

Children begin by closely observing their object, looking and, if possible, feeling its surface. The aim is to think about how the texture feels and how that could be shown through paint. The video encourages experimenting with different tools to recreate those textures. Pupils can try using a brush, sponge, cotton bud, scrunched foil, cardboard, a fork or even their fingers. They’re invited to explore how each tool creates a different mark or pattern on the page. Children are also reminded to think about colour.

The focus is on trying different approaches and discovering which techniques work best. Pupils can compare the effects they create and choose the one that most closely matches their object’s texture.
