Working with historic churches

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. In the video, Eleanor Johnson, a heritage expert, explains her job helping people understand and care for historic places of worship. She talks about how buildings like churches, once used for religious services, can still be important today as spaces for concerts, meetings, or even circus schools and climbing walls. Eleanor also shares how visiting and repairing these buildings connects her with the past and helps her learn about how people once lived, prayed, and built. She explains how understanding different beliefs is useful when working with buildings that have been used by people of many faiths over time. For example, a building in London has been a church, a synagogue, and now a mosque. Eleanor shows how places of worship tell stories through their design, decorations, and location. She encourages children to explore their own local historic buildings, to learn through drawing, taking photos, or doing research, and to think about how these buildings have changed with the communities around them.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, key stage 2, Year 6, What place does religion have in our world today? Lesson 3: What can buildings tell us about religion in the UK?
