Understanding puberty and growing up

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explains the process of human development from childhood through to adulthood, with a focus on the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. The video explores how boys and girls grow and change in different ways, including the development of muscles, body hair, voice changes, breast development, menstruation, and changes in height and body shape.

Pupils also learn about the role of hormones in triggering these changes, and how puberty affects both the body and emotions. The video addresses common side effects such as oily skin, spots, increased sweating, and mood swings, while emphasising that these changes are a normal part of growing up. It offers reassurance that everyone experiences puberty differently and highlights the importance of self-care during this time.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 5, Animals: Human timeline, Lesson 2: Puberty
