Making a simple pot
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to making a simple clay pot known as a pinch pot, and teaches them how to join clay using the score and slip method.
The process begins by rolling a ball of clay. Holding it in one hand, pupils press their thumb into the centre and use their fingers to gently pinch the clay upwards, turning the pot as they go. The video reminds children to keep the rim fairly thick to help the pot stay strong, and reassures them that it’s okay to start over if needed. Next, the video introduces score and slip. Pupils will make their own slip by mixing clay and water. Using a sharp tool like a cocktail stick or fork, they’ll score lines into both surfaces before brushing on the slip and pressing the pieces together.
Children can then create simple shapes and decorate their pots by joining these on using the score and slip method.
