Making print tiles

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they create printing tiles inspired by maps, using polystyrene sheets to explore line, shape and texture through printmaking.

Pupils begin by choosing an interesting section of their map, focusing on areas with a variety of shapes and lines. They sketch this section onto paper to help visualise how it will look when printed at a smaller scale. Next, they draw directly onto a polystyrene tile using a pencil. Before printing, they prepare their paper and ink. A small blob of ink is rolled out evenly on the tray. Ink is rolled onto the tile, covering it right to the edges. Pupils then press the tile onto paper, apply pressure across the back, and peel it away slowly to reveal their print. They review the result and make changes if needed.
