Creating observational drawings
This Art and Design scheme of work video supports pupils in creating a still life drawing of a tree, helping them to look closely and draw what they actually see.
The video guides children in how to start their drawing, how to consider size and shape, and how to make realistic shapes.
Children are reminded to include details at the base of the tree, such as roots and ground lines, to make the drawing feel grounded and complete. The video also explains how to observe light and shadow, helping pupils understand where to add tone and shading to make their drawing appear more three-dimensional. Using softer pencils, children can add bark texture and small details like leaves or twigs to bring their drawings to life.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Upper key stage 2 Formal elements: Architecture unit. It encourages careful observation and accurate representation, building confidence in still life and drawing from real-life reference.
