Drawing maps

This Art and design scheme of work introduces a lesson in which children will be using maps as inspiration for their artwork.

They’ll begin by drawing a map of a familiar journey, which will be used in the next few lessons. The journey could be their route to school or somewhere local they know well. Encourage children to close their eyes and picture the journey in their mind. As pupils will be making an artist’s map, rather than a geographical one, they can use their imagination in their maps. Their journey can include something invented. Pupils should be offered a range of drawing materials, from which they can choose what works best for them. The focus is on creativity and personal response. Ask them to use lots of colour, take up space on the page, and enjoy the process.

This lesson is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Map it out unit.
