Communities near volcanoes

This Geography video introduces Key stage 2 pupils to the positive and negative impacts of volcanoes, encouraging them to think about why people might choose to live near them. It explores the destructive effects of volcanic eruptions, from loss of homes, jobs and habitats to the risks of earthquakes, tsunamis and harmful gases while also highlighting the benefits volcanoes can bring.

Pupils learn how volcanic ash makes soil fertile for farming, how cooled lava can be built on and how tourism creates jobs and income for local communities. The video also explains how hot springs and volcanic mud are used, how precious stones can be mined from volcanic rock and how geothermal energy provides a sustainable source of electricity.

This video balances the challenges and opportunities of living near volcanoes, helping teachers guide children in developing a deeper understanding of how people interact with their environment.
