Making house tiles

This Art and design scheme of work video guides pupils through the process of creating their own clay house tile using their existing designs.

To begin, pupils will use the skills of rolling, joining and pressing, which they’ve already learned. They’ll keep their house drawings close by as a reference, but they’re also encouraged to adapt and change their ideas as they work.

The video models how to roll out the clay and cut a clean tile shape using a card template. Pupils then decide which house feature to make first and use shaping techniques to form the parts. They’ll use the score and slip method to join pieces securely and experiment with pressing tools or objects into the surface to add texture and detail. Throughout the lesson, children are reminded to check back with their design and make thoughtful choices as their sculpture develops. Once finished, pupils compare their tile with their original drawing, discussing what stayed the same and what changed.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Clay houses unit.
