Winter and hibernating animals

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores what happens to animals during winter, with a focus on hibernation. The video begins in a snowy forest, where pupils observe how some animals adapt to the cold by staying active, while others prepare to hibernate by finding food and safe places to rest.

Through vivid examples such as hedgehogs curling up in leaves, bats hiding in caves, and butterflies resting in cracks, pupils learn how hibernation helps animals survive the winter when food is scarce. The video ends with the arrival of spring and the reawakening of hibernating creatures, reinforcing seasonal change and animal behaviour.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Reception, Reception units, Changing seasons, Lesson 3: Winter wildlife
