The è sound in French
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It helps pupils explore the French vowel sound è, which looks different depending on accents and letter combinations. Pupils discover that the grave accent (è) makes a soft, flat sound, unlike the sharper sound of é. They also learn that this sound can be made by ei, ai, or an e followed by a double consonant or certain final letters such as l, c, or f.
The video continues with clear mouth mechanics, guiding pupils to relax the jaw and throat to create the soft è sound, similar to the start of the English word “eggs.” Pupils practise producing the sound, then listen carefully to sentences to count how many times they can hear it. With multiple examples shown, they can see how often this sound appears in French words and notice where spelling patterns help to predict pronunciation. The video ends by encouraging pupils to collect and recall other words they already know that use the è sound, helping to build their confidence in reading and speaking French.
