Learn British Sign Language: Bird

In this Geography video, the children learn the British Sign Language (BSL) sign for bird. The children are shown that this involves opening and closing the thumb and index finger near the mouth, like a little bird pecking.

The video is part of an optional Geography sustainability lesson in which the children explore different animal habitats, such as ponds, logpiles and nests. They identify which animals live in each habitat. As they watch, the children are encouraged to make the sign for the animal they think belongs in each place.

The bird sign helps the children recognise that birds live in the air or in nests and have wings that allow them to fly. This short clip supports learning through movement and observation, helping to reinforce understanding of animals and their homes.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography Sustainability collection. It supports discussions about how creating animal homes can help look after the environment.
