Embodying the dragon's energy through rhythm

This Music video invites Year 4 pupils to explore how rhythm can represent different levels of a dragon’s energy. Through a colourful animation, children watch the dragon sleep, wake, chase the pearl, rest and celebrate, encouraging them to think about how changes in movement can be matched with changes in music.

The video supports pupils in experimenting with improvisation by creating rhythms to accompany the dragon’s changing actions. As they watch, children are encouraged to explore how longer or shorter rhythms, faster or slower tempos and louder or quieter dynamics can reflect different moods and levels of energy. The animation provides inspiration before pupils create and layer their own rhythmic loops.

The animation encourages pupils to listen carefully, make creative musical choices and explore how rhythm can help tell a story. By responding to the dragon’s movements through music, children begin to understand how composers use rhythm, tempo and dynamics to create atmosphere and musical contrast.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children compose creatively and explore how music can communicate mood, movement and character.
