Creating an ancient Egyptian scroll

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils plan their own Ancient Egyptian-style scroll, using sketchbooks to explore ideas, develop imagery and experiment with colour and layout.

The aim is to create a scroll that tells a story or shares a message. Pupils begin by sketching ideas inspired by Ancient Egyptian art, adapting traditional images to suit their own meaning. They experiment with colour by mixing paint to create earthy tones, similar to those used in ancient artwork. Pupils are encouraged to test out different patterns too, either replicating ones they’ve seen or inventing their own based on Egyptian styles.

To help plan the layout, the video introduces thumbnail sketches, which are quick, small drawings that help pupils test different arrangements before choosing their final composition. Once they’ve explored a range of ideas, pupils select or redraw their final design, ready to transfer onto their scroll in the next lesson.
