Making a background for poem portraits

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils are shown how to create backgrounds for their poem portraits using paint or collage.

Children will explore how colours, textures and shapes can affect the final outcome. Pupils consider what their background might say about them, such as how bold colours could suggest energy, or textured layers may indicate movement and mood. They are encouraged to experiment with a range of techniques. The focus is on making creative choices and how each element supports their portrait.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. It supports pupil as they build towards a unique, creative finished piece.
