How to find the mean
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. The mean is the average of a set of numbers. To find it, first add the values one by one until you have the total. Then divide that total by the number of values you started with. The result is the mean – your average.
You can remember it with this rhyme:
Add the values one by one,
divide by how many then you’re done.
The mean’s the average, don’t you see,
divide the sum by quantity.
This quick method works for any set of numbers and is a great way to compare results in a fair test.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, Making connections: Does the size of an asteroid affect the diameter of its impact crater?Lesson 2: Investigating asteroid craters – Gathering data
