Why we need bridges

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. Every day, people, cars, and trains travel from one place to another. But when something like a river or a deep canyon blocks the way, we need bridges – amazing structures that help us cross safely. Bridges carry heavy loads, link places together, and can even let boats pass underneath.

They’re built from strong materials like metal, stone, wood, and even glass. Building a bridge is a big job that brings engineers and builders together. They use maths, science, and creativity, along with special shapes and patterns, to make sure their bridges are strong and sturdy. Can you spot any shapes in bridge designs? Now it’s your turn – what shapes and patterns would you use to build your own strong bridge?

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 2, Materials: Uses of everyday materials, Lesson 5: Testing strength
