Exploring how scissors are an example of lever mechanisms

In this Design and technology video, pupils are introduced to how scissors work as a mechanism. The video explains that scissors are made up of two levers that move around a single pivot and shows how these levers work together to cut.

Pupils are shown how the two levers can be separated to help them understand how each lever moves from the pivot, and how combining them creates the function of scissors. The video supports pupils in using correct vocabulary and developing a clear understanding of how levers and pivots work together in a familiar tool.

The video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
