A vocabulary progression list detailing the terminology covered across the Kapow Primary Music curriculum. Words in bold show new vocabulary that has been introduced.
Why do I need this vocabulary progression for Music document?
Vocabulary acquisition is essential in primary schools, especially for pupils with EAL, SEND needs, disadvantaged backgrounds and disengaged students.
As pupils progress through their studies, they require more specialised vocabulary to understand and discuss the topics at hand. It is important that pupils are introduced to the correct language and terminologies to express their thoughts and ideas about music. This helps them accurately describe music and communicate effectively in both writing and speech.
This document ensures that pupils have a firm grasp of the basics of musical vocabulary before moving on to more complex or abstract concepts. Without being secure in the terminology introduced in the EYFS and KS1, they may struggle to understand or communicate about Music in their later music education.
The document follows the Kapow Primary Music scheme, ensuring the pupils build upon it as they progress through the school.
