National curriculum alignment for our Science scheme
This resource demonstrates how Kapow Primary’s Science scheme of work covers the statutory guidance from EYFS (Reception) through to KS1 and KS2.
How does this document support Science curriculum planning?
The document maps each unit of the scheme to the specific content and aims of the Science National curriculum. This ensures that every lesson contributes to the spiral progression of skills and knowledge, leading to the attainment of end-of-key-stage targets.
For EYFS, it details alignment with Early Learning Goals and Development Matters statements, providing transition and EYFS Science guidance.
What core Science skills and knowledge are covered?
Kapow Primary’s Science scheme of work is built around the following three strands:
- Scientific knowledge and understanding – gaining foundational knowledge of key scientific concepts; addressing common misconceptions; learning specialist vocabulary to articulate scientific ideas.
- Working scientifically – learning about scientific processes and methods through methods of enquiry, including observing over time; pattern-seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing; and researching using secondary sources.
- Science in action – learning about famous scientists of the past and the methods they used; identifying how scientific understanding has changed over time; exploring jobs and careers related to science.
What are the benefits of this curriculum mapping document for teachers?
This National curriculum mapping document clearly shows which key skills are developed in each unit across the year groups. It ensures a broad and balanced Science curriculum, giving children varied experiences with the fundamentals.
Supported by this document, teachers will find clear pathways for Science assessment, ensuring consistent tracking of pupil progress.
