Our approach to the primary Science curriculum
This printable PDF document provides a detailed overview of Kapow Primary’s 36-week Science scheme of work, designed to support schools that deliver the subject each week. It helps primary teachers confidently deliver a well-structured, engaging Science scheme, aligned with the National curriculum and designed with recommendations of the Ofsted Research review series: science and Finding the optimum: the science subject report in mind.
What does Kapow Primary’s Science long-term plan contain?
The long-term plan outlines the progression of skills and knowledge in Science, ensuring that pupils build upon their learning each year in a spiral curriculum.
It covers the statutory requirements of the National curriculum, details the Science skills and knowledge taught, offers guidance on Science assessment and provides information to support the implementation of Kapow Primary’s Science scheme within your primary school setting.
How does Kapow Primary’s Science scheme develop knowledge and skills?
This document provides a suggested long-term plan for each year group, ensuring a clear pathway for pupil learning. Progression is broken down into the following key areas:
- Scientific knowledge and understanding – gaining foundational knowledge of key scientific concepts; addressing common misconceptions; learning specialist vocabulary to articulate scientific ideas.
- Working scientifically – learning about scientific processes and methods through methods of enquiry, including observing over time; pattern-seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing; and researching using secondary sources.
- Science in action – learning about famous scientists of the past and the methods they used; identifying how scientific understanding has changed over time; exploring jobs and careers related to science.
