Please note: This document is a preview of the 2026/2027 RSE & PSHE long-term mixed-age plan. As the scheme is being developed, updates are likely to be made.
Our approach to the mixed-age RSE & PSHE curriculum
This printable document provides a detailed overview of Kapow Primary’s mixed-age RSE & PSHE scheme of work, designed to support mixed-age settings arranged into Y1/2, Y3/4 and Y5/6 classes.
The plan organises RSE & PSHE units into a rolling two-year programme, with Cycle A and Cycle B units taught alternatively. This allows teachers to confidently deliver a well-structured, mixed-age RSE & PSHE scheme aligned with the DoE’s statutory guidance and the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study.
What does the mixed-age RSE & PSHE plan contain?
The plan outlines the progression of skills and knowledge in RSE & PSHE, ensuring that pupils build upon their learning each year in a spiral curriculum.
It covers the statutory requirements of the National curriculum, details the RSE & PSHE skills and knowledge taught and offers guidance on primary RSE & PSHE assessment and the scheme’s implementation.
How does Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE scheme develop knowledge and skills?
This document provides a suggested long-term plan for mixed-age year groups, ensuring a clear pathway for pupil learning. Progression is broken down into the following key areas:
- My healthy self – Learning how to look after their mental and physical health and make choices that support their wellbeing.
- Connecting with others – Learning how to build positive relationships, communicate with respect and understand the importance of kindness and boundaries.
- The online world – Learning how to use the internet safely, recognise risks and behave responsibly when communicating or accessing information online.
- Citizenship (non-statutory) – Learning how to take part in their communities, understand rules, rights and responsibilities, appreciate diversity and fairness and develop early financial literacy.
- Staying safe – Learning how to recognise risks, respond safely in different situations and seek help when something feels wrong or unsafe.
- Health protection – Learning how to prevent illness, manage basic first aid and understand how hygiene, vaccines and healthy habits help keep people well.
- Growing up – Learning about the changes that happen as they grow, including puberty and developing bodies and how to manage these changes with confidence.
