This mapping document is suitable for use with the original Kapow Primary Art and design scheme (pre-September 2022). We recommend that schools no longer use this scheme and transition to our revised Art scheme.
How is the original Art and design scheme organised?
Download this handy downloadable curriculum overview and medium-term plan showing how the original Kapow Primary Art and design scheme of work meets the national curriculum requirements for KS1 and KS2, including links to unit of lessons.
Kapow Primary’s original Art and design scheme offers full coverage of the national curriculum for KS1 and KS2, as well as incorporating SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural) development. We have categorised our content into 5 areas:
- Making skills
- Generating ideas
- Formal elements
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
Our units each contain 5 lessons. These are designed to be taught in sequential order, with the exception of the lessons in the Making skills and Formal elements units which can be taught in any order. These two units feature within each of the year groups and develop the discreet skills and techniques of art, craft and design.

The original Art and design scheme was our primary scheme of work before September 2022. We have since revised it to make it even better, and we recommend that all schools use the revised scheme.
What has changed?
The new Art and design units of work:
- Provide sequential lessons organised into four core strands which run through each year group:
- Drawing
- Painting and mixed media
- Sculpture and 3D and
- Craft and design.
- Offer greater clarity over core art knowledge.
- Give you reassurance that complex skills are built on over time to enable control and proficiency.
- Introduce children to a diverse range of artists, contributing to an understanding of art over time and across cultures.
- Provide a range of outcomes for units. This develops creativity as children use sketchbooks to revisit ideas and apply their knowledge and skills when creating their own responses to stimulus.
- Build your confidence when integrating sketchbook work across units.

- Integrated teaching of the formal elements of art (line, shape, form, tone, texture, pattern and colour)
- Progression of knowledge and skills across from Reception to Y6

We also offer a new visual art assessment tool.
