Knowledge organiser: Geography – Y1 What is it like here?

A Knowledge Organiser that captures the essential knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit Geography, Year 1, What is it like here?

This resource is designed to support pupils as they explore their immediate environment through simple maps, aerial photographs, and directional language. It introduces foundational vocabulary such as left, right, near, and far, and encourages pupils to interpret symbols on a basic playground map using a visual key. Pupils also develop locational awareness by identifying the country they live in on a colour-coded map of the UK. The unit lays the groundwork for early geographical thinking by helping pupils describe and navigate their surroundings with confidence.

Transitioning to Kapow Primary Music

Planning for each year group to support staff and pupils to smoothly transition to our Music scheme of work in schools where music has previously not been taught consistently, or you have concerns about pupils’ ability to access the Kapow curriculum due to a lack of prior knowledge and understanding. All year groups have two catch up units (except for year two, which has one unit) to build a solid foundation of essential knowledge and skills before proceeding to our intended units and lessons for the year group.

Each of the catch-up units consists of selected lessons taken from a range of units in the previous year groups. This will support both staff and pupils in feeling confident and comfortable when approaching more advanced lessons.
