Why the Maya cities declined

This History video introduces teachers to the reasons behind the decline of the Maya cities in the southern lowlands during the Classic period. It outlines key environmental and human factors, including evidence of drought, deforestation, soil erosion, overpopulation, and warfare between city-states. The video supports teachers in guiding pupils through competing theories for why major cities like Palenque, Copán, Tikal and Calakmul were gradually abandoned by 900 AD, while northern cities such as Chichén Itzá continued to thrive.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History scheme – Maya. It provides clear explanations of the evidence archaeologists and historians use to form hypotheses, supporting teachers to lead inquiry-based discussions. The video helps prepare teachers to deliver lessons where children evaluate historical causes, construct arguments, and understand how civilisations change over time.
