Understanding binary and data calculation

This Computing video supports teachers in explaining what binary is and how it’s used in computing. It introduces binary as a base two counting system, contrasting it with our everyday base ten system. The video explores how binary represents information using only two values: on/off, one/zero, true/false. It explains that a combination of eight bits (a byte) can represent up to 255 values, and demonstrates how binary numbers are read, built and used to represent decimal numbers. Examples like showing the number six in binary and identifying the patterns up to fifteen help visualise the concept.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work. It prepares teachers to explain binary logic and arithmetic in a clear, age-appropriate way. Teachers are guided in modelling how to add and subtract binary numbers using column addition, including carrying over values. With only a few possible calculation outcomes, the process becomes accessible for pupils. The lesson builds on prior knowledge from earlier units and helps children move from understanding binary as a concept to using it in practical applications like binary arithmetic.
