Creating self-portraits

This Art and design scheme of work video supports teachers in guiding pupils to create a unique self-portrait using mixed media, bringing together skills developed across the unit.

Children will begin by reflecting on their previous work, selecting their strongest ideas from lesson four as the basis for their final piece. They’re encouraged to think about the intention behind their portrait. Pupils will also take part in evaluation and share feedback with others, to help them consider alternative approaches. The video also explains how the classroom should be prepared for this lesson so that children can make independent decisions about their art.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. It helps in the delivery of a creative final lesson for the unit. Each finished portrait will be individual, offering children the opportunity to experiment and reflect through mixed media.
