An overview of the knowledge and skills covered in the unit
This Art and design teacher video provides an overview of the unit, introducing the key knowledge and skills pupils develop throughout the sequence of lessons. It explores how artists use tone to create depth, form, contrast and emotion in their artwork. Using still life as a context, pupils investigate how light and dark areas affect the appearance of objects and help create the illusion of three dimensions.
The video explores how pupils develop their understanding of tone by mixing tints and shades using white and black paint and experimenting with different painting techniques. It also highlights the importance of light sources in still life arrangements and how pupils consider contrast, balance, shape and colour when creating their artwork. Throughout, the emphasis is on supporting teachers to understand how observation and experimentation help pupils make purposeful artistic choices.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
