Communicating messages through lyrics

This Music video introduces Year 6 pupils to how songwriters communicate messages through lyrics. It explores the role of verses and choruses in song structure, explaining how verses help tell a story while choruses reinforce the song’s main message through repetition.

The lesson examines a range of songwriting techniques, including repetition, rhyme, metaphors and emotive language. Pupils learn how repetition can emphasise important ideas, how rhyme creates patterns and flow, and how metaphors and carefully chosen words help listeners connect with feelings, experiences and messages.

Children begin to understand how songwriters use language creatively to influence emotions, communicate meaning and make songs memorable. The video encourages pupils to think critically about the messages behind lyrics and the techniques used to engage and inspire listeners.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore songwriting, lyric writing and musical expression.
