Communicating ideas through art

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils to plan an installation artwork that communicates a message or idea that matters to them.

It builds on pupils’ understanding that artists often create work to express their views, using the example of Heritage by Cai Guo-Qiang to spark discussion. The video encourages open-ended responses and reminds pupils that art can be interpreted in different ways.

Pupils choose their own theme, which might relate to local issues or global concerns. Teachers will select a learning outcome that suits their class, which could include sketchbook planning, collage, junk modelling, or constructing part of an installation in small groups. Suggestions are also included for creating a whole class piece, with each group working on a section to build a larger artwork. The video highlights the importance of using question prompts to keep the focus on the concept behind the installation, not just what it looks like.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Interactive installation unit.
