Exploring watercolour through painted studies

This Art and design video shows the children how to create painted studies that explore different combinations of watercolour techniques, colours and textures. Using ideas from their sketchbooks as a starting point, the children learn how to experiment with small-scale paintings, selecting and combining techniques to discover the effects they create.

Rather than producing finished pieces, the children are encouraged to investigate different approaches, reflect on their results and identify the techniques they find most successful. The video also demonstrates how to annotate painted studies, helping the children record observations, refine their ideas and choose which techniques to develop into a larger abstract composition.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
