This Geography video gives Year 3 pupils a visual introduction to Antarctica and its distinctive landscape. Pupils observe a vast environment covered in snow and ice, helping them consider how Antarctica looks and how its landscape differs from places they may already know.

The video shows some of Antarctica’s physical features, including mountains, ice-covered land, floating ice and large icebergs. Pupils can observe the different shapes, colours and textures of the landscape and consider words they could use to describe what they see.

Alongside the frozen landscape, pupils see some of the wildlife that lives in Antarctica, including penguins and seals. The changing scenes also show different weather conditions, from clear blue skies to snow and strong winds, encouraging pupils to think about Antarctica’s polar climate.

The video can be used to develop pupils’ geographical vocabulary and observational skills as they identify and describe Antarctica’s weather and landscape. In the accompanying lesson, pupils record adjectives to describe what they see before exploring Antarctica’s location and physical features in more detail.
