Teaching abstract historical concepts in context: Empire, invasion and settlers

In this History video, teachers are supported in introducing and developing the children’s understanding of complex substantive concepts, such as empire, peasantry and monarchy, by placing them in varied historical contexts, including those of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

The video highlights the importance of clear definitions and shows how embedding each concept in meaningful contexts helps the children build secure knowledge. Teachers observe how comparing these ideas across different periods enhances understanding, with examples such as contrasting Roman military invasions with Anglo-Saxon and Viking migratory settlements. The video also demonstrates how the Roman Empire’s scale and diversity can prompt rich discussions about political, social and cultural implications, helping teachers strengthen their conceptual teaching with confidence.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, designed to develop pupils’ enquiry skills and understanding of everyday life in the past.
