Comparing characters from the past

This History video supports teachers in introducing strategies to help Early years pupils compare and contrast characters from stories, including significant historical figures. It explains how activities can build on children’s existing skills, such as noticing differences in photos, to help them identify similarities and differences between fictional characters and real historical figures. The video highlights the value of whole-class discussions before independent exploration and demonstrates how visual prompts, such as puppets, dolls, and dressing-up props, can promote historical thinking through play and storytelling.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s EYFS History resources. It supports teachers in implementing Development Matters and early national curriculum objectives, using oral storytelling, role-play and cross-curricular resources to help children develop early historical vocabulary, observation skills and a sense of the past in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
