Exploring the rainforest

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils to explore the rich colours, patterns and textures found in rainforest plants and animals.

Children will begin by selecting images that inspire them—this could be animal fur, leaf patterns, or tropical flowers—and sketching elements that stand out, focusing on shape, texture or colour. The lesson introduces mood boards, a design tool used by professionals to gather and present creative ideas. Pupils will identify common colours in their board, picking four or more dominant colours and two or three highlight colours to create a palette. These colour swatches will be drawn or painted and added to the board for reference.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Fabric of nature unit. It helps children to look closely, gather inspiration and build visual themes.
