Creating different tones through shading

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the concept of tone and how to achieve it through shading techniques.

It introduces two pencil grips: the detail grip for precise lines and the shading grip for broader tones. Children are encouraged to practice the four rules of shading: using the side of the pencil, shading in one direction, applying even pressure, and avoiding gaps. The importance of varying pressure to create different tones is emphasized, along with the suggestion to practice shading from dark to light. Ultimately, the video prepares viewers to apply their shading skills in creating a tonal picture. The video provides helpful advice for pupils to improve their shading skills.

The video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Developing drawing skills unit. It helps pupils improve their technical drawing skills and builds their confidence as artists.
