Copying portraits
In this Art and Design scheme of work video, pupils learn how to transfer their poem portraits from tracing paper onto a prepared background using different printing techniques.
The video begins by encouraging children to carefully choose the position of their portrait and decide what looks best before making their final copy. Two methods are introduced for creating copies are introduced: copying the drawing directly in pen, or creating a monoprint. A monoprint is a print that’s unique as it can only be made once in exactly the same way.
Children explore different monoprinting techniques, including using carbon copy paper, which transfers the image by pressing onto it, and using acetate sheets covered with a thin layer of printing ink. By drawing over the top, they press their portrait onto the background paper below.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. It helps pupils build confidence in their creative abilities and introduces them to a broader range of techniques.
