Considering composition

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in creating a still life composition, ready for sketching and painting.

The video begins by introducing composition. Pupils will carefully place their chosen objects together so they look interesting when viewed from above. The video models how to explore different combinations, such as rotating objects, trying overlaps and even placing items upside down, to see what looks best. Pupils are reminded to keep standing over their arrangement to check how the final composition will appear in their painting.

Once they’re happy with the layout, they photograph it and move on to making a quick sketch. The video highlights the importance of noticing the size of each object in relation to the others. They do not need to worry about detailed drawing, instead they should just focus on the main shapes and layout. This activity helps children understand how artists make choices about what to include and where to place things in their work.
