Making wattle and daub: step by step

In this History video, the children follow a step-by-step visual demonstration of how to build a wattle-and-daub structure, similar to those used in Anglo-Saxon homes.

The video clearly shows all the equipment and each stage of the process. Children learn to build the wattle frame using lolly sticks stuck in modelling clay, weaving pipe cleaners through and securing the ends. They then create the daub by mixing small pieces of clay and straw with water to form a thick, sticky consistency, which is applied to both sides of the wattle, filling gaps and neatening the surface. Once left to dry, the structure becomes solid, giving the children hands-on insight into Anglo-Saxon building techniques.

As part of Kapow Primary’s Anglo-Saxon Britain series, the children explore practical construction skills while understanding how early settlements were built and lived in.
