Lesson plan

1. Attention grabber

Enter the classroom as a French speaker and greet some of the children by:

  • Shaking their hands and saying Bonjour ! (Hello!).
  • Waving, saying Salut ! (Hi!).

Repeat several times, so the children know which action to respond with. Give lots of praise to those that speak up and have a go, even if they don't get it quite right.

Then as a class, say Bonjour ! with a mimed handshake, and Salut ! with a wave.

Do a rapid-fire mix of Bonjour ! and Salut ! with children showing the right gesture.

Ask a confident child to come up and be the teacher (le maître or le professeur (masculine), la maîtresse or la professeure (feminine).
