Lesson plan
Before starting this unit, you might want to check that the children can recall:
- What a cognate is. (When two words from different languages have the same linguistic origin, they sound the same/similar and can be spelt in similar ways. These are cognates. E.g. violon - violin.)
What different language detective skills can be used to help with language learning. (Recognising learnt vocabulary; spotting cognates; considering word order to anticipate the meaning of words; using context and knowledge of the world to predict the meaning of unknown words.)
Ask the children if they know any words for musical instruments in French. Note these on the board and tick these off if they appear in this lesson.
Explain to the class that there are a lot of cognates in the names of musical instruments in French and English.
