Lesson 6: School council

The class will learn about how the School Council works and why it is important to have a democratic election system

  • To begin to understand how democracy works in school

Statutory guidance

  • Democracy is not included in the statutory guidance however the DfE National Framework for Citizenship 2015 says schools should teach What democracy is and about the basic institutions that support it locally and nationally.  
  • Democracy is also one of the fundamental British values.

Pupils needing extra support: May benefit from talking to an older child who is on the school council. Can use the Writing frame provided. 


Pupils working at greater depth: Should be asked to identify how democracy works in the School Council.
