Creating and performing lyrics for a Calypso song.

Learning objective

  • To improvise a vocal part in the style of a Calypso

National curriculum

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices (and playing musical instruments) with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
  • Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
  • Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimensions of music

Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support: You may wish to group children according to their literacy ability during this lesson, and then provide the support mechanisms that you would usually use for a writing task (Teacher/TA support, writing frame, vocabulary list etc).

 

Pupils working at greater depth: These children could be encouraged to set their news headlines to a rhythm or even a pitch so that they are chanted or sung along in time to the music rather than just called out over the top.
